FAQ’s I Get A Lot About Coaching
These are common questions I get about coaching. Do you need a health coach, a nutritionist, or a therapist? Here is the breakdown!
Do I need a nutritionist? If you want to know about exact meal planning, what to eat and what not to eat in regards to a specific diet where you are looking at micronutrients and macronutrients or trying to improve a health condition, then the nutritionist is the better fit. If you want to know the breakdown on how many calories you should be eating or if you are reaching the right targets to improve your numbers like cholesterol, glycemic levels, and mineral deficiencies, you would talk to a nutritionist for this.
How a coach can help: The nutritionist might have a set of recommendations on what he/she wants you to do, and the coach helps you with action steps and figuring out HOW you are going to make it happen. In a nutshell, coaches promote whole-food diets, and provide a menu of different diets where the individual chooses what he/she wants to do. As a coach, I will encourage you and help you strategize to move towards whole foods versus processed foods that have a long shelf life. I provide information (after asking your permission to share), and I also check to see what you already know! A lot of times, my clients set goals around eating more veggies, or trying out eating gluten-free or dairy-free for 30 days to see how it works for them, or trying out intermittent fasting, for example. Some have already purchased books they want to try, and so we strategize a plan, and I hold them accountable. Some have tried the Mediterranean diet, the Anti-inflammatory diet, a flexible Keto or Wahls Protocol, and I help them find ways to adopt it into their life. If they go gluten-free, I offer product suggestions that they can sub for the gluten products like eating cassava, chickpea, almond tortillas instead of flour. I can also provide recipes or resources where my clients can find what they need.
Do I need therapy? A therapist deals with healing pain, dysfunction, and conflict within the individual or in relationships, usually resolving difficulties that come from your past or trauma that can hold you back from moving forward. Therapy can be beneficial to help people with dealing with the present in more emotionally healthy ways, like dealing with anxiety or grief, and depression.
How a coach can help: Coaches focus mainly on action, accountability, and follow-through on what you want to do, achieve, and who you want to be In The Future. I help you create action steps and strategies to move you forward to your goal in many other parts of the wellness wheel like financial, spiritual, mental, physical, relationships, creativity, and more areas. Sometimes a past memory may come up, and we use that information to help you move forward. There might be some emotions, and that’s very normal. And when tears are evoked, that can be a release, and also lets us know we are human! If someone feels anxiety at certain moments of their day, and we find tools to add into their life for helping with managing stress or anxiety. This could be setting goals around meditation, breath work, or something else that can help. In coaching, we are always cultivating and growing a positive environment and mindset, and providing tools for you to use in your daily life.
To Sum Up: In session, if we are working together and the conversation starts to go into nutritionist or therapist territory, I will be transparent with you, on who would serve you best! That is part of my job to refer my people out to another medical professional when necessary, and I have helped clients find the right practitioner for them in addition to doing coaching with me.
